A legendary Olympic hero passes away at 76—see how this icon lived a remarkable life

The world of sports and beyond is in mourning as we bid farewell to a true legend, George Foreman, who passed away at the age of 76.

Foreman’s family confirmed that the boxing icon and Olympic gold medallist died peacefully in his sleep on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

In a statement filled with both sorrow and pride, the family shared, ‘Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.’

George Foreman’s journey from the streets to the summit of the boxing world is a tale of resilience, determination, and reinvention.

His gold medal victory in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Olympics was just the beginning of a storied career. Turning professional the following year, Foreman’s raw power and fierce determination saw him quickly ascend the ranks of the boxing elite.

His crowning moment came with a stunning second-round knockout of the then-undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973, claiming the heavyweight title in a display of sheer dominance.

Foreman’s reign as champion included two successful defences before he faced Muhammad Ali in the iconic Rumble in the Jungle in 1974.

In what would become one of the most famous bouts in boxing history, Ali, the underdog, outsmarted and outlasted Foreman, delivering a knockout in the eighth round that would change the course of both fighters’ lives.

The defeat was a crushing blow to Foreman, who took a year off before making a comeback. However, after a second professional loss, he retired in 1977 to embrace a new calling as an ordained minister in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yet, the ring beckoned once more, and in the 1980s, Foreman made an improbable return to boxing. At 143 kg, he fought to raise funds for a youth centre he had founded in Texas.

His comeback was marked by an impressive streak of 24 straight victories, culminating in a loss to Evander Holyfield in 1991. But Foreman’s persistence paid off when, at age 45, he knocked out undefeated Michael Moorer to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history.

Foreman retired for good in 1997 with a record that spoke volumes: 76 wins, 68 by knockout, and just five losses. His legacy extended beyond the ring, as he became a successful entrepreneur, most famously promoting the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide and earned him more than his boxing career ever did.

His personal life was as full and vibrant as his professional one. Foreman was married five times, and in 1985, he wed Mary Joan Martelly, who would be his partner for the rest of his life.

He was a father to five sons, all named George, five biological daughters, and two adopted daughters, embodying his larger-than-life persona even in his choice of family names.

As tributes pour in from around the globe, we remember George Foreman not just as a heavyweight champion and Olympic hero, but as a humanitarian, a man of deep faith, and a loving family patriarch.

The Ring Magazine expressed their condolences, stating, ‘Foreman is considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, and will be remembered as an icon of the sport forever.’ NBA champion Scottie Pippen added, ‘Rest in peace, George Foreman. Your legacy lives on, champ.’

While the cause of his death has not been announced, what remains clear is the indelible mark George Foreman has left on the world. His story is one of triumph, transformation, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.

As we reflect on his remarkable life, we at YourLifeChoices extend our deepest sympathies to his family and join the many voices celebrating the extraordinary legacy of George Foreman. Share with us your memories of this sporting giant and how he may have inspired you in your own life’s journey.
