Are your plastic food containers still safe to use?

As we navigate the conveniences of modern kitchen storage, plastic food containers have become a staple in many Australian households, particularly for those who appreciate practical solutions for leftovers and meal prep. Yet, despite their convenience, a critical question arises about whether these reliable containers are putting our health at risk.

The answer isn’t straightforward, as it largely depends on the type of plastic and the condition of the container. To ensure your safety and the quality of your food, it’s crucial to understand the signs of wear and the potential risks associated with old plastic food containers.

Firstly, let’s delve into the types of plastic that are considered safe for food storage. By flipping your container upside down, you’ll find a recycling code inside a triangular symbol, numbered from 1 to 7. Food scientists, such as Michael Tunick from Drexel University, advise looking for codes 2, 4, or 5. These numbers represent high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and polypropylene (PP), respectively—all of which are durable and deemed safe for repeated use.

The safety of these plastics is paramount because, as food science consultant Bryan Quoc Le points out, certain plastics can leach harmful components into your food. These substances may act as endocrine disruptors, affecting hormone balance, and microplastics can flake off into your food, potentially impacting your health in various ways, including lung and liver function and metabolism.

When considering whether to invest in brand-name containers from companies like Rubbermaid and Tupperware or to opt for generic brands, it’s worth noting that the quality gap between them has narrowed. However, brand-name containers have historically been designed to be thicker, sturdier, and more reliable. As a budget-conscious shopper, you can still choose off-brand containers, but always verify the plastic codes to ensure safety.

The lifespan of a plastic food container isn’t set in stone, but it’s generally advised not to use containers that are more than 10 years old. This is because older plastics may contain bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical linked to various health conditions, including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. Notably, Tupperware ceased using BPA in its products in the U.S. as of March 2010, setting a trend for BPA-free storage solutions.

To maximise the longevity of your plastic containers and minimise health risks, avoid using the dishwasher. The high temperatures can degrade the plastic, increasing the likelihood of chemical leaching. Hand washing with hot, soapy water is the recommended cleaning method, and it’s best to avoid harsh scrubbing tools that can scratch the surface, potentially creating a haven for bacteria and further degrading the plastic.

While plastic food containers offer convenience, it’s essential to be vigilant about their condition and the type of plastic used. Look for safe recycling codes, avoid using old or damaged containers, and opt for gentle cleaning methods to keep your food storage safe and healthy.
