Authorities urge caution over Q fever outbreak—here’s how to protect yourself!

Health authorities are sounding the alarm over a new outbreak of Q fever, a highly infectious disease that spreads from animals to humans. The surge in cases has sparked concern, particularly among those who work or live closely with livestock.

Q fever can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, lead to long-term health complications. With the outbreak, experts are urging the public to take precautions and stay informed to prevent further spread.

In the lush and often idyllic landscapes of Victoria, a health alert has been issued by the Victorian Health Department as cases of the infectious Q fever disease have seen a significant uptick from 77 reported cases in 2024 compared to the averages of the past five years.

Q fever is an illness caused by the Coxiella burnetii, a bacterial pathogen that can jump from animals to humans. While the typical culprits are cattle, sheep, and goats, this bacteria doesn’t discriminate. It’s also been found in a variety of animals including kangaroos, camels, rodents, cats, dogs, birds, and even wallabies.

For our readers at YourLifeChoices, particularly those who enjoy the rural vistas and the company of animals, this news is especially pertinent.

Q fever can manifest in different ways. Some individuals may carry the bacteria without any symptoms, while others might experience a mild sickness. However, the concern grows when the disease escalates to a severe ‘flu-like illness,’ complete with fever, sweats, chills, headaches, joint pain, fatigue, and weight loss.

The long-term health complications are not to be taken lightly, as they can include heart disease, bone and joint infections, and vascular infections.

A particularly troubling aspect of Q fever is the chronic fatigue syndrome it can induce, affecting 10 to 15 per cent of those with severe infections. This condition can be debilitating, impacting the quality of life and the ability to perform daily activities.

The primary mode of transmission of this disease is through the inhalation of dust or aerosols contaminated with the bacteria from the birth fluids, faeces, urine, or blood of infected animals. This puts individuals who work closely with animals, such as those in agriculture, livestock, and dairy farming, at a heightened risk.

See below tips to stay protected amidst the Q fever outbreak.

The good news is that there is a vaccine available that offers a high level of protection against Q fever.

Health officials are strongly recommending that workers in high-risk occupations get vaccinated. However, it’s important to note that those who have previously contracted Q fever or have been vaccinated should not receive the vaccine again ‘due to the risk of adverse reactions.’

‘It is necessary to be screened for previous exposure prior to vaccination,’ says health officials.

For those who may contract Q fever, antibiotics are available for treatment. Additionally, there are preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of exposure. Simple actions such as thoroughly washing hands and arms with soapy water after contact with animals can make a significant difference.
