Footing the bill for NBN rollout

With the rollout of the NBN costing more and taking longer than expected, the Turnbull government is considering introducing a new levy on telecommunications companies to fund the service to regional areas. While this may indeed solve the initial funding issue, it will, as the Government admits, lead to higher prices for internet users.

It’s a move that contradicts the advice of the Government’s hand-picked expert panel, which advised a levy such as this, “causes greater distortions than it is intended to remedy”.
