Woolworths receives praise for thoughtful support after cyclone chaos

In the aftermath of a natural disaster, communities often come together in extraordinary ways, showing resilience and compassion that can truly warm the heart. Amidst such trying times, acts of kindness can shine like beacons of hope, and one such beacon recently came from an unexpected source: Woolworths, one of the leading supermarket chains in the country.

After ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred wreaked havoc, leaving homes without power and many facing the daunting task of restocking their fridges, Woolworths stepped in with a gesture that has been widely praised.

In a random act of kindness, the supermarket giant began handing out e-gift cards to their customers, a small but significant token of support during a difficult period.

One customer shared her delightful surprise on social media when, upon visiting her local Woolworths, a staff member offered her an e-gift card. Initially thinking it was a joke, she accepted the gift with a laugh, only to find out that this was a genuine gesture from the store. The employee, unsure of the exact reason behind the giveaway, simply knew that they were meant to distribute these cards to customers.

The customer’s post sparked a wave of responses from others who had experienced similar acts of generosity from Woolworths.

‘I got one and was so emotional. I was doing the shop to replenish all the food that got spoilt after the cyclone and power outages. I was ever so grateful after a particularly horrendous start to 2025. The man didn’t realise just how much that little act could mean to,’ wrote one commenter.

‘Yes at the check out! I asked why (but very appreciative) and the young girl said her manager just said to hand them out. Nice surprise after a very expensive shop to replace all the frozen stuff after the cyclone,’ another chimed in.

‘I got one yesterday. Was very happy to get it,’ commented someone else.

‘Yes, I was doing a click and collect today and had a staff member hand me one too (in Queensland, for reference),’ shared a fourth person.

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that the e-gift cards were indeed a response to the challenges posed by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, saying, ‘We understand Cyclone Alfred was a challenging period for our customers. As a small gesture of thanks for their understanding during the disruption in our store operations, some of our stores have been handing out e-gift cards to customers over the weekend.’

The impact of this gesture cannot be overstated. For those who received the e-gift cards, it was more than just financial aid; it was a sign that their community and local businesses cared about their well-being.

These stories remind us that in times of need, a small act of kindness can go a long way. Woolworths’ initiative is a shining example of corporate empathy in action, demonstrating that even large companies can play a role in nurturing the communities they serve.
