PM pledges extra energy bill support—here’s how much you can save

Australians struggling with rising electricity costs are set to receive additional relief as the government announces new energy bill support. The initiative aims to ease financial pressure on households facing soaring power prices. With cost-of-living concerns growing, the latest measures will provide much-needed assistance to millions of families.

The expanded support package aims to cushion the impact of rising power prices, offering direct financial assistance. But will it be enough to make a real difference?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a welcome reprieve, pledging to cut an additional $150 from power bills as part of a substantial $1.8 billion energy package. This pre-election pitch is not just a one-off gesture but an extension of the government’s commitment to ease the financial burden on Australians.

Last year’s budget introduced a $3.5 billion energy bill relief initiative, which included a $300 rebate for every household, spread across the financial year. Now, the Albanese government is extending these subsidies until the end of 2025, with the $150 rebates being automatically applied to electricity bills in quarterly instalments.

The Prime Minister has made it clear that the family budget is the government’s number one priority, saying, ‘This is another cost of living relief measure that my government is delivering for Australians while putting downward pressure on inflation.’

However, the opposition has criticised the move, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton describing it as a ‘desperate act’ and likening the government’s approach to a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ Despite this, the opposition has pledged to support the initiative, recognising the immediate relief it provides to Australians.

Meanwhile, Treasury estimates suggest that this measure will not only reduce headline inflation by around half a percentage point but also lower household bills by an average of 7.5 per cent nationally, compared to what bills would be without the extension.

The government has also claimed that these subsidies have contributed to a projected 25.2 per cent fall in electricity prices in 2024, a stark contrast to the mere 1.6 per cent decrease that would have occurred without the rebates.

While the extension of energy bill rebates will cost taxpayers $1.8 billion over the forward estimates, it’s a price that seems to be accepted as necessary by political figures across the spectrum.

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor has called for budget savings through cuts to public service ‘back offices,’ and Nationals leader David Littleproud has expressed support for the relief, albeit with a critical view of the government’s handling of energy and food costs.

For our readers, this energy relief could mean more manageable power bills and some much-needed financial breathing room. It could be a significant step towards tackling the cost of living crisis, and it’s essential to understand how these rebates will be applied and how you can ensure you’re receiving the full benefit.

Remember, staying informed about government initiatives that affect your wallet is crucial. If you have any questions about the energy package or how to make sure you’re getting the rebate, don’t hesitate to reach out to your energy provider or local representatives for assistance.

  1. This miniscule amount does help but barely as it’s a band aid measure. Australia needs to buy back it’s generators and also take back control of our gas reserves if we are to stop being ripped off by the multinational companies we sold so much of it to.
Both the LNP and ALP were complicit in facilitating this sell off and are jointly responsible for the rising price of energy in this country.
Neither of those parties deserves any votes so at the next election put them both last.

  2. It’s money taken from people in the way of tax, being paid to people whose energy bills have gone up to compensate for the rise in energy prices by the same people who are collecting the taxes. In short it is commonly known as a bribe. Will it stop energy prices increasing. Not on your nelly but currently there is an election about to take place. Its a bit like those people outside London railway stations with a table, three thimbles and a pea.

  3. Oh well, this is what happens when we demonise has, like in Victoria, and demolish or not maintain coal power stations.

Pretending we can run everything on batteries and windmills – nearly all of which is made in China using either fossil fuels or nuclear.
