A visual feast: Kmart launches new collaboration with Indigenous artist

Kmart Australia has once again demonstrated its commitment to celebrating Indigenous culture and artistry with the launch of a new homewares range designed in collaboration with an acclaimed Indigenous artist.

Its latest collection, with Indigenous artist Rachael Sarra, named ‘Spirit Entwining’ is a vibrant testament to the rich heritage and contemporary creativity of First Nations artists, and it’s set to bring a unique and meaningful touch to Australian homes.

Starting at the accessible price of $5, the collection encompasses a variety of home essentials, including bed linen, decor, dining, and furnishing products. The range, which will be available in stores and online on Thursday, 13 March, is a visual feast of Sarra’s signature contemporary style, marked by striking pinks and purples.

Sarra, a First Nations artist hailing from Goreng Goreng Country, infuses her work with a deep sense of cultural identity. Her pieces are not only visually stunning but also steeped in cultural significance, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.

‘I believe in the power that art plays to tell a story and to allow people to explore complex ideas in an engaging and inclusive way,’ she explains.

The collaboration between Sarra and Kmart’s Melbourne-based design team has resulted in each piece being an authentic representation of Sarra’s vision. The artist’s goal was to create beautiful products that serve a purpose beyond mere aesthetics.

‘Partnering with Kmart has been a deeply rewarding experience. This collection reflects my heritage and story in a way that feels bold, accessible, and true to my vision,’ she said.

Kmart’s Head of Community Trish Briggs echoes Sarra’s sentiments, highlighting the retailer’s ongoing efforts to be a ‘trusted and credible partner of First Nations peoples.’

She also notes that Kmart’s substantial business size offers a unique platform ‘to celebrate Indigenous artists, share their talents, and amplify their storytelling’ through products that ‘inspire and educate’ customers and team members alike.

The ‘Spirit Entwining’ collection features an array of items designed to enhance any living space. Among the standout pieces are the Blossom fragrance candle in frosted purple glass with a lid, framed wall art, a pinky purple planter, a white vase with pink handles and a purple pattern, a platter, serving bowl, glasses, and a quilt cover set.

Each item is a statement piece, inviting conversation and reflection on the stories they represent.

This initiative follows Kmart’s previous successful collaborations with Indigenous artists, including Wiradjuri artist Judith Young for the ‘Waluwin’ collection and Dharug and Darkinjung artist Kyralee Shields for the ‘Ngurrawa’ collection, in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

These partnerships are part of a broader trend of inclusivity and representation in the retail space, which is increasingly important to consumers.

In addition to the ‘Spirit Entwining’ range, Kmart has been busy expanding its offerings with the recent launch of the ‘February Living’ range. This collection introduced a plethora of new decor, kitchen and diningware, and bedding options. However, the most exciting development for many shoppers is the expansion of Kmart’s furniture range, a response to customer demand for affordable yet stylish home solutions.

Kmart’s latest homewares range is more than just a shopping opportunity; it’s a chance to bring the stories and artistry of Indigenous Australia into your home. As you refresh your space with these unique pieces, you’re also supporting the work of talented artists like Rachael Sarra and contributing to the ongoing dialogue about the importance of cultural representation and respect.
