Discover the surprising toiletry that works as an efficient mould cleaner

Mould can be a persistent and unsightly problem in many Australian homes, particularly in areas with high humidity or poor ventilation. It’s not just an aesthetic issue but can also pose health risks, particularly for those with allergies or respiratory conditions.

While there are countless products on the market claiming to tackle this fungal foe, sometimes the most effective solutions are already sitting in our bathroom cabinets. In a surprising revelation, a cleaning expert has confirmed that an unlikely household item can be used to combat mould.

This tip came to light in a Facebook group where cleaning enthusiasts share their best hacks. A group member seeking advice on removing mould from bedroom walls received a response that might have seemed unconventional at first.

The unlikely mould remover

The success story shared in the group was about a woman who, following the advice she found online, used Listerine mouthwash to address ‘really bad mould’ on her walls. She said she applied the treatment at the end of last year, and the mould has not returned since.

This anecdote piqued the interest of many, leading to further investigation into why mouthwash could be an effective mould cleaner.

Cleaning expert Nigel Bearman says ‘Listerine contains a combination of alcohol and essential oils that have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties,’ adding that ‘these properties help to kill bacteria, germs and can even eliminate mould spores.’

While Listerine was the product mentioned, Bearman says any inexpensive ethanol-based mouthwash is believed to work wonders in killing fungal spores.

To use mouthwash as a mould cleaning agent, dilute it with water. One part mouthwash to three parts water is the recommended ratio. Pour this solution into a spray bottle, spritz the affected areas, and let it sit for five to ten minutes. Afterward, wipe the area clean with a cloth.

For persistent mould, repeat this process every few days until the mould has completely disappeared. It’s also crucial to ensure the room is well-ventilated to reduce the risk of mould returning.

Other mould remover alternatives

If you don’t have mouthwash on hand, another ethanol-based option is vodka. To create a mould-cleaning solution with vodka, mix equal parts water and vodka in a spray bottle. Spray this on the mould, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then wipe away.

The antifungal properties of vodka will not only clean the mould but also help prevent it from coming back.

However, if you find that mould or mildew keeps reappearing even after using these hacks, it may be a sign that the room requires better ventilation, or there could be a more significant underlying issue, such as a leak.

Maintaining a mould-free space

To prevent mould, it’s essential to run the fan in the bathroom during and after showers, open windows and doors to promote airflow, and consider using a dehumidifier in damp rooms.

For those facing stubborn or extensive mould issues, it’s time to call in professional help for a mould inspection and removal. While do-it-yourself solutions can be effective for minor problems, a professional can address the root cause and provide a long-term solution.

Remember, the key to mould control is not just about cleaning; it’s about creating an environment where mould can’t thrive. So, while you’re stocking up on mouthwash for your oral hygiene, consider keeping an extra bottle in your cleaning arsenal—it might just be the secret weapon you need to keep your home mould-free.
