ALDI says goodbye to a gluten-free favourite—will it make a comeback?

For many Australians, ALDI has become a go-to destination for unique and affordable grocery items, including a range of speciality products catering to dietary needs. However, fans of ALDI’s gluten-free offerings have recently been dealt a blow with the confirmation that the supermarket is discontinuing its much-loved gluten-free cake mixes.

Introduced in 2024, ALDI’s red velvet and brownie gluten-free cake mixes quickly found their way into the hearts and shopping carts of customers. Their popularity soared as they provided a delicious and convenient baking solution for those with gluten sensitivities or coeliac disease. But as an ALDI spokesperson has confirmed, these products were part of ALDI’s ‘Limited Time Only’ range, which means they were always intended to be temporary treats.

The spokesperson’s statement read, ‘ALDI’s popular Red Velvet and Brownie Gluten Free Cake mixes went on sale last year as part of ALDI’s Limited Time Only range. As is the nature of ALDI’s ‘Limited Time Only’ range, these products were here for a good time, not a long time! Customer favourites have been known to return, so shoppers should keep an eye on our website for information on our ‘Limited Time Only’ and new product launches to find out if their favourite products are making a return.’

This news has left many gluten-free families feeling a bit lost, as not all gluten-free products hit the mark in terms of taste and texture. The ALDI cake mixes were a rare find that combined quality with convenience, and now consumers are left searching for alternatives.

Currently, ALDI’s shelves are devoid of gluten-free cake mixes, though the spokesperson did highlight that the store continues to offer other gluten-free products, including flour, pasta, cup noodles, and rice noodles. For those seeking a gluten-free brownie mix, options are available, but the unique red velvet cake mix is harder to come by.

While there are numerous gluten-free recipes available online, the appeal of cake mixes lies in their simplicity and reliability. They’re affordable, easy to make, and consistently yield delicious results. Coles and Woolworths do stock a variety of gluten-free cake mixes, but red velvet lovers will be disappointed to find that this particular flavour is not among them.

In the absence of ALDI’s red velvet and brownie mixes, gluten-free consumers can still find a selection of butter cake, vanilla cake, brownie mix, choc chip cookie mix, devil’s food cake, apple and cinnamon muffins, and banana bread at other supermarkets. Additionally, both Coles and Woolworths offer ready-made gluten-free treats in their in-store bakeries.

The gluten-free community in Australia is a tight-knit one, often sharing tips and recommendations on social media and forums. For instance, a social media forum dedicated to gluten-free products in Australia has become a valuable resource for those seeking advice on the best products available. Coles’ Ultimate Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip cookies and Kez’s Kitchen Gluten Free Choc Raspberry Vienna Eclairs have both received praise, with the latter described as a ‘yummy, expensive, but nice if you want a lil treaty treat’.

Moreover, the forum has highlighted alternatives such as Coles’ gluten-free brownie mix, which some claim is superior to pricier brands like Betty Crocker. Carman’s Cookies and Cream protein bars have also been recommended as an ‘excellent’ gluten-free option.
