Consumer alert: Authorities warn of life-threatening items sold at local retailer

In a world where the hunt for a good bargain can sometimes overshadow the need for safety, a stark reminder has come to light for consumers. A household product, widely available at a retail store, has been found to pose unexpected safety risks. Consumers are being advised to remain cautious and follow official safety guidance.

Shoppers who may have purchased this item are being urged to check their homes and follow safety advice.

Those who have recently purchased a lamp from the popular discount store Panda Mart in Melbourne are being urged to take immediate action due to a serious safety hazard that could be life-threatening.

Energy Safe Victoria, the state’s electricity safety watchdog, has issued an urgent safety warning after their compliance officers made a concerning discovery. During an inspection at the Cranbourne-based retailer, they found that certain lamps being sold had exposed wires. This defect poses a significant risk of electric shock or even death by electrocution if someone accidentally touches them while the lamp is turned on.

The issue doesn’t stop there. Some of the lamps reportedly had wiring covers that could be easily removed, further increasing the risk of coming into contact with live electrical parts.

In addition to the lamps, the store was also found to be selling unsafe study desks equipped with socket outlets that could potentially expose users to live parts.

Leanne Hughson, the chief executive officer of Energy Safe Victoria, emphasises the gravity of the situation, stating, ‘These lamps are potentially deadly.’ She advises anyone who has purchased a table lamp from Panda Mart since its opening in February to stop using it immediately.

She adds, ‘All household mains-operated electrical products sold in Victoria should carry the regulatory compliance mark. This mark indicates that the product meets safety standards.’

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Panda Mart has been in the spotlight for safety concerns. Just eight days prior to this latest warning, authorities had already raided the store, seizing hundreds of items including toys, baby rattles, and cosmetics that failed to meet safety standards.

Nicole Rich, the director of Consumer Affairs Victoria, reminds businesses of their duty to ensure that the products they sell are safe and meet the required standards. She highlighted the fact that while Victorians are understandably looking for bargains amidst rising living costs, safety should never be compromised, especially when it comes to products for babies and children.

Panda Mart, which originated in South Africa and boasts a vast array of over 50,000 cheap household items mostly sourced from China, aims to undercut other low-cost retailers like Kmart. However, this recent incident raises questions about the true cost of such discounts.

According to news.com.au, the store has been contacted for comment and has indicated to authorities that they will cease the sale of the table lamps and remove the problematic socket outlets from their desks.

For our readers at YourLifeChoices, this serves as a crucial reminder to always prioritise safety over savings. It’s essential to inspect products for safety marks and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true.

If you have purchased any of the mentioned items from Panda Mart, take action immediately to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
