Kmart recalls popular kitchen item after alarming safety reports

Attention, Kmart shoppers! A product that became a sensation on social media for its clever design is now under scrutiny for safety concerns. The Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar, part of Kmart’s renowned Anko range, has been urgently recalled due to reports of the jars exploding, posing a serious risk to consumers.

The innovative jar, which gained popularity on social media for its ability to separate pickles from their brine with a simple flip, has been a hit among home cooks and food enthusiasts. However, the excitement turned to concern after several alarming incidents prompted Kmart to take swift action.

The recall affects jars sold between February 15, 2023, and March 3, 2025. Kmart has issued a stark warning to customers to ‘immediately stop’ using the product and return it to any Kmart store for a full refund, with or without a receipt. The urgency of the recall stems from the potential for ‘serious injury from lacerations’ if the jar were to break unexpectedly.

According to the recall statement, the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar can become hazardous when used to store certain fruits or vegetables in liquid. The fermentation process can cause a build up of gas, leading to the jar exploding or making the lid extremely difficult to remove. This was echoed by customers’ comments online, with some sharing their struggles with the jar’s tight seal and others recounting their own close calls with the product. One user commented, ‘I had already thrown mine out because yes, it kept being really hard to open!’ and another shared, ‘I was wondering how long this was gonna take to happen, the first one I bought I broke it opening it…’

One customer recounted a harrowing experience where ‘glass went flying everywhere’ after the jar exploded, narrowly missing her eye. Initially, she thought the loud bang was from an exploding light bulb, not the pickle jar. Another customer, Sally Asplin, shared a photo on a Facebook group with over 600,000 members, showing the aftermath of the jar shattering in her fridge, with beetroot splattered all over and the shelf dislodged by the force of the explosion.

Despite the recall and the potential danger, some users have expressed their intention to continue using the jar, citing that it has been working perfectly for them. This highlights the varied responses from the public, with some prioritising their personal experience over the reported risks.

Kmart’s product safety recall emphasises the importance of consumer safety and the company’s commitment to addressing potential hazards. If you have purchased the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar, it’s crucial to heed the recall and return the product to avoid any risk of injury.

Product recalls serve as important reminders to stay informed about potential safety risks in our homes. While some customers have shared concerns about the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar, others may have had different experiences.

  1. Heavens above. What can anyone do to protect some people from themselves? The people who will knowingly continue to keep and use a product that they have been told is potentially dangerous as it could explode badly injuring them with flying fragments of glass.
Life Choice does good job by sharing info such as this as we haven’t seen or heard anything about this recall until this article.

  2. The good old ‘plastic’ ‘Pic-A-Deli’ from Tupperware has always been my go-to for storing my beetroot, etc. I just don’t have any glass storage containers, as once they’ve been dropped, then they’re completely useless.
