Food trends come and go, but every so often, one takes over supermarket shelves and captures the attention of shoppers nationwide. Whether it’s a nostalgic flavour making a comeback or a new ingredient gaining cult status, these trends shape the way we eat, shop, and indulge.
Now, Woolworths and Coles are responding to a growing demand for a particular item, expanding their offerings to keep up with consumer cravings. But what’s behind this sudden surge in popularity—and why can’t Australians get enough of it?
The humble pistachio is now taking centre stage. Gone are the days when pistachios were merely a shell to crack open during a leisurely afternoon. These little green nuts have become the talk of the town, with a myriad of pistachio-flavoured products popping up left, right, and centre.
From the creamy indulgence of pistachio spreads to the sweet satisfaction of pistachio pastries, and even the luxurious taste of pistachio-infused gelato, it seems that pistachio fever has well and truly hit the country.
Responding to this ‘growing demand,’ Woolworths and Coles have significantly increased their offerings. Woolworths, for instance, has seen a ‘real buzz’ around pistachio, with the flavour infiltrating everything from desserts to savoury dishes.

‘At Woolworths, we’re always looking to introduce exciting new flavours and products that inspire our customers, and we’re thrilled to be expanding our range to meet this growing demand,’ a spokesperson said.
They’ve even launched a Pistachio Cheesecake, which flew off the shelves, with over 80 per cent of the first batch sold in just three weeks. Not to be outdone, Coles has introduced a Pistachio & Vanilla Gelato, a pistachio and almond butter spread, and even Honey Roasted Pistachio Frozen Mochi.
But what’s driving this pistachio pandemonium? According to a popular Melbourne food lover, pistachio spread is quickly becoming a market leader, surpassing traditional favourites like Biscoff and Nutella.
This shift is reportedly attributed to consumers’ increasing desire for healthier, more natural alternatives to sugary, heavily processed spreads. With its rich, nutty flavour and a bounty of nutrients like healthy fats, antioxidants, and protein, pistachio spread is resonating with health-conscious consumers.
The rise in popularity can also be linked to Australians becoming more adventurous with their food choices. Brands like Pistachio Papi are capitalising on this trend, offering new and exciting products for those eager to try something different.

Even Krispy Kreme has joined the pistachio party, launching a limited-edition doughnut in collaboration with Pistachio Papi that has been selling out daily since its debut.
Interestingly, while pistachios are a new sensation for many Australians, food blogger Nectro Vlangos points out that pistachio spreads and creams have long been popular in Italy. This is a sign that Australia is catching up with international tastes, and with the variety of pistachio products now available, it’s clear that this trend is more than just a passing fad.
However, not everyone is on board with the pistachio craze. Some sceptics on social media have called the trend ‘ridiculous,’ questioning why pistachios are suddenly everywhere. But as we know, food trends are much like fashion—they come in waves, and right now, pistachios are riding high.
