In the ever-evolving landscape of Australian e-commerce, a new champion has emerged to claim the throne in the realm of online retail. BIG W, known for its budget-friendly offerings and wide product range, has toppled the two-time reigning champion Bunnings to become Australia’s best online retailer for 2025. This remarkable achievement was announced by Power Retail, the authority on e-commerce excellence Down Under.
Power Retail’s annual recognition of Australia’s Top 100 Online Retailers is a much-anticipated event that shines a spotlight on the leaders of Australian e-commerce. Their evaluation process is nothing short of meticulous, scrutinising retailer performance across four critical areas: acquisition, conversion, fulfilment, and retention. These pillars of e-commerce success are measured through specific metrics such as traffic, site performance, mobile experience, delivery options, payment methods, and customer engagement.
This year, Power Retail introduced a new twist to their evaluation by including customer satisfaction as a metric. According to David Fear, Power Retail’s head of data, this addition played a significant role in BIG W’s ascension. ‘BIG W’s online platform has an extremely high customer satisfaction rate,’ Fear explained. ‘Their competitive pricing and wide product range were also key factors in securing their win.’
BIG W’s commitment to an integrated, omni-channel experience has clearly paid off, with a staggering 93 per cent of customers expressing satisfaction with their online journey. Their exceptional performance across acquisition, conversion, fulfilment, and retention underscores their leadership in the online retail space. Moreover, BIG W’s reliable service, characterised by fast delivery and excellent customer support, has cemented customer trust and loyalty.
While BIG W enjoys its newfound status at the top, last year’s champion, Bunnings, has seen a slight dip, dropping to fifth place. JB Hi-Fi has climbed up to second, while Kmart has held its ground in the top three. Chemist Warehouse also remains a strong contender, retaining its fourth-place position.
The top 20 list features other iconic brands that Australians know and love, including Myer, Officeworks, The Iconic, Rebel, BCF, Adore Beauty, Petbarn, David Jones, Dan Murphy’s, Target, The Good Guys, Appliances Online, IKEA, Bonds, and Spotlight. Each of these brands has made a significant impact on the digital retail landscape and, by extension, the Australian economy.
Grant Arnott, CEO and founder of Power Retail, reflected on the significance of the All Star Bash awards night, saying, ‘It’s amazing to look back now at 10 years of the All Star Bash… and see the incredible impact the Top 100 businesses have had on the economy’.
As online shopping continues to evolve, it’s fascinating to see how retailers adapt and rise to the top. With BIG W now leading the pack, it raises an interesting question—what makes an online store truly great?
