3 easy settings to boost your iPhone privacy

In the digital age, our smartphones are akin to personal assistants, storing a wealth of personal information and guiding us through our daily lives. For the 1.4 billion iPhone users worldwide, the convenience of these devices is unparalleled. However, with great convenience comes great responsibility, especially when it comes to safeguarding our privacy. Recent security warnings have highlighted that certain default settings on iPhones could be leaving users vulnerable to cybercriminals. Let’s delve into what these settings are and how you can protect yourself by turning them off.

Firstly, the automatic Wi-Fi connection feature is a potential gateway for hackers. While it may seem innocuous, your iPhone’s default setting to search and connect to available Wi-Fi networks can lead to trouble. This is particularly risky when it comes to ‘evil twin’ attacks, where a malicious Wi-Fi network masquerades as a legitimate one. Once connected, hackers can potentially access your personal data, including sensitive financial information. To prevent this, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and under ‘Auto-Join Hotspot’, select ‘Never’. This simple step can significantly reduce the risk of inadvertently joining a dangerous network.

Next on the list is location services. While it’s true that certain apps require your location to function properly, such as Maps and Weather, it’s not necessary for all apps to have access to this information at all times. The compromise of location data aggregator Gravy Analytics earlier this year is a stark reminder of how location data can be misused. To manage location permissions, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Here, you can review which apps have access to your location and adjust the settings to ‘While Using’ or ‘Never’, depending on your preference and the necessity of the service.

Lastly, the issue of app tracking is a significant concern for privacy-conscious individuals. Apps can collect and share information such as user IDs, names, and email addresses, linking this data with information from other apps or websites. This is often used for targeted advertising and user behaviour analysis. Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature is a step in the right direction, allowing users to see which apps are tracking them. To access this, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. If the ‘Allow Apps to Request to Track’ option is enabled, your apps can ask for permission to track your activities. For those who prefer to keep their app usage private, toggling this option off is a wise choice.

By disabling these three settings, you’re taking proactive steps to protect your personal information from being compromised. It’s important to remember that while technology offers us incredible benefits, it also requires us to be vigilant about our digital footprint. Regularly reviewing your device’s security settings and staying informed about potential risks can go a long way in keeping your data safe.
