A new gadget from CES aims to help blind people to navigate and perform tasks to gain greater independence. Could this change the way blind people live?

Aira’s technology, which was recently demonstrated at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), allows blind or visually-impaired users to request assistance when they encounter difficult situations. When assistance is requested, a live high-resolution video stream is sent to an Aira ‘agent’, while Google Maps GPS data and other information is also provided. Agents are real people who can talk to the blind user and help them to perform tasks, such as walking around obstacles or ordering from a menu.
Aira’s aim is to expand life’s possibilities for the blind or visually impaired and give them greater confidence and independence.
Aira is currently only available in the United States on a monthly subscription, which includes a pair of smart glasses.
