Vodafone is making changes to mobile plans, and some users will pay more

As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology and telecommunications, it’s no surprise that changes in pricing structures are a common occurrence. However, for many Australians, particularly those over 50 who are keeping a keen eye on their budgets, these changes can be more than just a minor inconvenience. The latest news from the telecom sector is that Vodafone, one of the country’s leading providers, is set to increase monthly fees by $4 for some of its mobile data customers.

This decision comes as Vodafone aims to ‘simplify’ its product range, a move that has left many consumers feeling the pinch. An email that was circulated to Vodafone customers, which was subsequently reported by NewsWire, outlines the upcoming changes. The increase will affect plans purchased before 2024, and the company assures that for most affected postpaid plans, customers will receive more data, allowing them to continue browsing, streaming, and using their mobile devices as usual.

Vodafone, under the umbrella of TPG Telecom, has expressed that this price hike is a response to the rising costs of doing business. The email to customers stated, ‘At Vodafone we are investing in our products and systems to provide you with a better experience. At the same time, the costs of doing business continue to grow.’

The transition to Vodafone Infinite plans is part of the company’s strategy to streamline its offerings. A spokesperson for Vodafone explained that the change will impact a ‘range of older plans that have been in the market for a while.’ It’s important to note that customers who have signed up for new Vodafone plans in 2024 or 2025 or those who have upgraded to these plans will not see this increase.

The spokesperson further elaborated, ‘We have made these changes in response to the continuing high costs of doing business, to support ongoing investment into our products and systems, and to further simplify our product range.’ They also highlighted that the increased monthly data allowance for most impacted postpaid plans will allow customers to enjoy their mobile activities without interruption.

Customers can expect to see the changes reflected in their next billing cycle. It’s understood that the adjustments will not affect the recently introduced Vodafone Infinite plans, which became available from Boxing Day 2024 and offer a variety of data options, from smaller monthly allowances to larger plans and SIM-only options.

This news follows a similar announcement from Telstra last year, which saw price hikes across many of its data plans, including a $3 increase to its Mobile Plan Basic. The changes varied, with bundled plans increasing by $2 per month and the Data Plan Large jumping by $20 per month.
