Best place to hang with a local

Meeting the locals wherever you go is one of the best bits of ‘doing the lap’. Tony Yunupingu is one such local who is only to happy to stop, chat and share. He lives in the tiny community on Bremer Island, just off the coast of Nhulunbuy in eastern Arnhem Land.

Tony kindly offered to teach me how to hunt mud crabs with a traditional three-pronged spear. And as you can see from the pic, he’s a pretty good teacher. I stalked and speared this monster all by myself, although I was a bit too timid to hold him on my own – those claws were lethal!

And in case you were wondering, it tasted every bit as good as it looked.
