Must-do experiences around Darwin

Those who think Darwin is all crocs and no class are sadly mistaken. In fact, Darwin does have a class, and plenty of tours, for just about everything. You’ll find plenty of activities to keep yourself occupied.

At Wharf One Food & Wine it’s all about the wood-fire grill, which not only serves superb food but also stages cooking demonstrations. You’ll find plenty of ways to cook with local barramundi and other seafood in plentiful supply here in this bright and breezy restaurant perched right on the edge of the Darwin Waterfront precinct.

Outback Floatplanes is another must-do when visiting Darwin. Offering four types of adventures, we suggest taking the Ultimate Tour for a great overview of the region. On this trip, you’ll start with a scenic flight in a floatplane before landing on Sweet’s Lagoon. From there, it’s a helicopter flight over the Finnis floodplains, an airboat fast lap and tour over the wetlands, and a cruise on Sweet’s Lagoon. Did somebody mention James Bond?

Head to the Adelaide River and join the Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise. There are believed to be more than 80,000 salties plying the waterways of Northern Australia. That all changes on this tour where the crocs relinquish their hiding places in the hope they will be fed. Prepare to stare down the jaws of some incredible jumping creatures.

With such a crucial and colourful wartime history, it would be remiss to visit Darwin and not learn about the vital role it played in World War II at the Defence of Darwin Experience. Situated at East Point, this interactive experience tells the story of the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese on 19 February 1942.
