The world’s newest country

The idea of a merger between Australia and New Zealand is not a new one, but one that was recently resuscitated in the Meat and Livestock Association’s (MLA) Australia Day lamb advertisement.

You’ll note the Australian representative admitting that we “used to be the greatest country on Earth, but we’ve lost the plot. Cheating at sport, we can’t even hang on to a prime minister.”

The same rep suggests merging the two countries – New Australialand – so we can all share the best of each other’s resources and “stuff”.

“We’ve got awesome stuff, you’ve got awesome stuff. Most of our awesome stuff is already yours,” says the Aussie.

“We can even have a new Australia Day, on a date we can all agree on.”

Well, Tourism New Zealand has responded to the merger in typical Kiwi fashion.

The board has developed a website – www.newaustralialand.com.au – which, according to Tourism New Zealand general manager Andrew Waddel “packaged all of the best bits of New Australia-Land into one place”.

“They all just happen to be in New Zealand,” he added.

Spruiking its caves without snakes, amazing craft beer, fabulous food, front row seats to the best light show on the planet, and other world-class attractions, the website also makes it easier for Aussies to book their holiday to that land of the long white cloud.

“There is no limit to what you can experience when you make the trip across the ditch, which for our friends on the eastern seaboard is as quick as two movies and a meal,” said Mr Waddel.

Have you been to New Zealand? How does it compare to Australia? Would you like to see the two countries merge?
