What to do after Kakadu

If you’re planning a trip to Kakadu, we’re willing to bet you’re a savvy traveller with a taste for adventure and you’re probably cramming as much sightseeing into your travels as possible. You’ve got the Ubirr climb, the plunge pool at Gunlom, and of course you’ve booked a sunset cruise across Yellow Water.

But what if we told you that there’s so much more to do after Kakadu?

Just a three-hour drive south of Kakadu in the Katherine region, Nitmiluk National Park is your ticket to a world of unspoiled wilderness that’s brimming with experiences you’ll never forget.

If you’re a creature of leisure, be sure to check out the sunrise breakfast cruise down Katherine River. Or if you’ve got a need for speed, the high powered jetboat rides that whip through the Nitmiluk Gorge will indulge your inner adrenaline junkie (subject to seasonal availability).

For a rewarding scenic hike, you can’t go past the Jatbula Trail. The full trail is 58km long, and passes some of the Territory’s most amazing Aboriginal rock art, and waterfalls. If you’ve got your swimming gear handy, make sure you take a dip at Leliyn (Edith Falls), before climbing up to Baruwei Lookout for a spectacular finish.

Just 3.5 hrs west of Kakadu in the Darwin Region is nature’s own waterpark – Litchfield National Park. Home to Florence FallsWangi FallsBuley Rockhole and Tjaynera Falls, Litchfield is a haven for visitors who love to get wet in picturesque locations.

And of course, a trip to the Top End wouldn’t be complete without a satay from the Darwin’s iconic Mindil Beach Markets (three hours from Kakadu). The markets are a melting pot of different cultures and cuisines – don’t forget to wear your stretchiest pants, as you’ll definitely need room for seconds!
