Dual names for Australian destinations

Tourism Australia is ramping up its dual naming marketing strategy in a bid to attract interest from overseas tourists.

Tourism Australia chief Phillipa Harrison announced the move at the Destination Australia conference earlier this month.

“We’re going to be dual naming the cities, using the current term alongside the traditional Aboriginal name,” said Ms Harrison.

“We’ve been doing it in social media and will be rolling it out across all of our content from this point on.”

According the The Australian, the known Aboriginal name alongside the English names will soon appear on marketing material for capital cities and other Australian locations.

This naming convention is becoming increasingly common in Australia, as private and public sectors do more to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land.

The move will re-introduce more than 60,000 years of Indigenous custodianship, language, and knowledge into the public psyche.
