Eagle-eye view of Vienna

When people talk about an eagle-eye view of a city, they’re often referring to a view from up high.

Not the Vienna Tourist Board, which recently equipped actual eagles with camera equipment and sent them into the sky to capture breathtaking views of the Austrian capital.

In a world-first project, the eagles, Fritzi, Bruno, Darshan and Victor, were fitted with lightweight 360° cameras and 16:9 format cameras on their backs and launched from the Danube Tower and a hot air balloon near Palais Schwarzenberg to capture footage of the city from above.

Circling above the city, the eagles captured stunning bird’s-eye views in 4k resolution, that armchair travellers around the world can view with VR goggles or with the naked eye on YouTube.

The project was supported by the production company Red Bull Media House, who were brought on board to ‘give the Vienna Tourist Board campaign wings’.

“The project was a world first – never before had eagles wearing 360° cameras been used to capture footage of a major city,” said Vienna Tourist Board chief Norbert Kettner.

The board is eager to stress that all the necessary animal welfare clearances were obtained and none of the eagles came to any harm during filming.
