Ghost town camping: A hidden gem in Queensland’s outback

Embarking on a caravan adventure across Australia’s vast landscapes, the Francis family stumbled upon a hidden gem that’s both eerie and enchanting: the ghost town of Mary Kathleen in Queensland. This once-thriving mining community now offers a unique camping experience for those brave enough to delve into its deserted streets. The family shared their discovery with Yahoo Lifestyle, and their tale is a must-read for any intrepid traveller seeking a brush with history and solitude.

The Francis family, who document their travels on social media as @thefamilyfind, initially planned a brief overnight stay in their 17ft caravan. However, they quickly realised that Mary Kathleen’s haunting allure warranted a longer visit. ‘We felt that two or three nights would be ideal, especially if you want to use the site as a base to explore the area,’ Sam Francis advised.

For those considering a visit, Sam emphasised the need for self-sufficiency. ‘You must be fully self-contained,’ she warned. ‘Ensure you have a toilet on board, and remember, there are no garbage bins, so take your rubbish with you.’ She also cautioned about the deteriorating roads leading to the town, advising visitors to navigate the potholes carefully.

Mary Kathleen’s history is as rich as the uranium once extracted from its depths. Established in 1958 and named in honour of Norm McConachy’s late wife, the town was a bustling hub until the mine’s closure in 1982. At its peak, Mary Kathleen boasted thousands of residents, a school, an Olympic-size pool, an open-air cinema, a golf course, two churches, and a hospital. Today, it stands as a silent testament to a bygone era, with remnants of house slabs and community structures inviting exploration.

‘The main thing we did was visit the uranium mine and check out the mine shafts,’ Sam recounted. ‘Make sure you head to the old town square, too, to learn about the history of the town.’

Beyond its historical intrigue, Mary Kathleen offers a plethora of activities. ‘You can day trip from here to Mt Isa, Corella Dam is nearby, and there are some great walks,’ Sam said. The vastness of the site means that even with a hundred vans, you can feel ‘nearly alone’, providing a sense of isolation that’s increasingly rare in today’s world.

The Francis children revelled in the freedom of the open space, biking and climbing trees, while the family enjoyed the pastoral scenes of cows and horses wandering the area. Sam described the experience as ‘bliss’.

As for amenities, travellers should not expect the comforts of a typical campsite. Mary Kathleen is off-grid and self-contained, but despite the lack of facilities, the Francis family rated their stay with 5 stars. ‘Considering it’s privately owned, we felt privileged the owners let us share in the history,’ Sam expressed. The site allows dogs, there’s no time limit on stays, and there’s even Telstra service for those who need to stay connected.

The highlight of their visit, however, was the striking blue hue of the abandoned uranium mine’s water. ‘It looked so inviting,’ Sam said, ‘but unfortunately, no swimming is allowed due to the toxic levels of the water.’

This captivating journey through the ghost town of Mary Kathleen reveals its haunting beauty and rich history, offering a truly unique experience for adventurous travellers. Whether you’re drawn to Australia’s mining past or simply in search of a peaceful retreat into nature, this off-the-beaten-path destination has much to offer.
