As Australians, we’re blessed with a vast and varied landscape that offers everything from the rugged outback to the sparkling coastline. And it seems that more of us are keen to explore the wonders of our own backyard, with domestic travel on the rise in 2025. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next local getaway, look no further than the New South Wales beach-side suburb of Port Stephens, which has just been crowned the ‘Aussie Town of the Year’ for 2025 by the travel experts at Wotif.
This prestigious accolade is part of the annual Wotif Aussie Town of the Year Awards, now in its eighth year, which recognises trending Australian destinations based on accommodation affordability, quality, and traveller satisfaction. Port Stephens has not only captured the hearts of the judges but also the interest of travellers, with a whopping 75 per cent increase in accommodation interest.
Located just over a two-hour drive from Sydney or a mere 30-minute drive from Newcastle airport, Port Stephens is a gem on the NSW coast. It boasts pristine beaches that are perfect for everything from a leisurely swim to an adrenaline-pumping surf session. The Tomaree National Park offers a natural escape where you can immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna, while the impressive Stockton Sand Dunes—the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere—provide a unique adventure opportunity.
Leah Anderson, Mayor of Port Stephens, expressed her pride in the recognition, stating, ‘This recognition is a testament to the beauty, diversity, and welcoming spirit of Port Stephens. From our stunning beaches and natural landscapes to our rich cultural heritage and vibrant local community, there’s something for everyone here.’
The award comes at a time when new research from Wotif reveals that 78 per cent of Australians plan to travel domestically this year, marking a 9 per cent increase from the previous year. It seems that the allure of discovering new destinations within Australia is strong, with over a quarter (28 per cent) of Australians eager to visit new places in their homeland.
Short breaks are also trending, with many Australians finding that 3 to 5 days is the perfect length for a domestic trip. These mini-holidays are a fantastic way to recharge without the commitment of a long holiday, and Port Stephens is an ideal spot for such an escape.
Rounding out the top three destinations for 2025 are Cairns in Queensland, known for its gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and Mandurah in Western Australia, with its enchanting waterways and wildlife. NSW has reclaimed the crown from Victoria, which saw Bendigo take the title in 2024.
Rebecca Hurley, a Wotif Travel Expert, encapsulates the sentiment of the awards: ‘Aussie Town of the Year is about celebrating the destinations and world-class travel experiences in our own backyard. 2025 promises to be a positive year for domestic travel.’
Australia has so many incredible destinations to explore, and it’s exciting to see Port Stephens take the spotlight this year. Whether you’re planning a relaxing coastal escape or an adventure-filled trip, this award-winning gem has something for everyone.
