Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme to face major change—what it means for you

For many seasoned travellers and points collectors, racking up frequent flyer points is like collecting treasure, with each flight, credit card swipe, and hotel stay bringing them closer to that dream getaway. But what happens when the rules of the game change?

A recent shake-up in airline reward programs may mean your hard-earned points won’t take you as far as before.

If you’ve been meticulously saving your Qantas Frequent Flyer points for that dream getaway, you might want to sit down for this. Qantas, the country’s flag carrier, has announced a significant overhaul to its Frequent Flyer program, and it’s not all blue skies ahead.

Starting from 5 August, your hard-earned points will be taking a bit of a nosedive in value, particularly when it comes to indulging in those coveted premium seats on long-haul flights.

According to an analysis by The Australian, the value of points for major international routes is effectively being cut by a hefty 20 per cent. That means you’ll need to fork out an additional 20 per cent worth of points to secure a business class reward spot or a first-class seat on routes like Perth to Sydney.

Moreover, it’s not just the high flyers who will feel the pinch. Those planning to jet off from Brisbane or Sydney to Los Angeles, Sydney to Singapore, or Brisbane to Bali will also need to dig deeper into their points stash for a premium cabin experience.

When the changes are implemented, domestic flights and trips to New Zealand will also get a bump, requiring between an extra 5 per cent and 15 per cent worth of points.

This devaluation of points echoes a similar move by Virgin Australia’s Velocity program and marks Qantas’ first points increase in six years. In a statement, a Qantas spokesperson explained that the ‘adjustment was needed to ensure the frequent flyer program could continue to provide over 20 million reward seats and deliver other initiatives to reward members and improve the program.’

Despite Qantas Loyalty boasting a membership of 17 million, the business unit has seen a 6 per cent drop in earnings in the first half of this financial year.

Perhaps in an attempt to soften the blow of the 20 per cent points devaluation, Qantas has simultaneously announced a ‘double status credits’ and Qantas Points campaign. For a limited time until 19 March, frequent flyers can earn double points on bookings. These double points flights can be scheduled for travel between 19 March and 24 February, 2026.

The status component of the scheme could be a silver lining for many, allowing members to climb the membership tiers more swiftly.

‘Hundreds of thousands of members benefited from this offer last year, helping members to attain or retain their frequent flyer status or boost their points balance,’ said Andrew Glance, Qantas Loyalty chief executive.

‘This year we’re also introducing double points on Qantas Hotel and Holidays bookings, making that next dream trip even more rewarding.’

Glance also highlighted that there are ‘record numbers of members using points for flights, especially to destinations like Tokyo, Singapore, Queenstown, and Bali.’

While the double points offer may be a temporary balm, the sting of the devaluation is likely to linger for loyal Qantas customers. It’s a reminder that in the world of airline loyalty programs, the winds can change quickly, and what was once a ticket to luxury can suddenly become a little less golden.

For our savvy over-50s readers, it’s time to reassess your points strategy. If you’ve been saving for a special trip, consider booking before the changes take effect in August. It’s also worth noting that while points are a fantastic way to fly, it’s always wise to stay informed and flexible with your travel plans.
