The cats have it

If you’re a ‘cat person’, this island is probably as close to paradise as you’ll ever get. Cat Island, also known as Aoshima Island, in southern Japan’s Ehime prefecture is literally overrun by cats.

One of about a dozen ‘cat islands’ around Japan, there are significantly more feline residents than people, with cats outnumbering humans six to one.

Originally brought to Aoshima Island to deal with mice plaguing fishing boats, the cats have multiplied. More than a hundred cats now prowl around Aoshima, taking up residence in abandoned houses in the fishing village. Between the fish and free housing you can’t accuse them of being stupid.
