The rise of the ‘poshtel’

A new travel trend is coming your way and it’s set to change the face (and price) of accommodation. The ‘poshtel’ is an upscale or luxury hostel, combing the style and comfort of boutique accommodation with the price and value adds of a hostel. This new breed of accommodation is attracting a wide range of travellers.

At a poshtel, you can expect more than smelly dorms, communal bathrooms and mattresses riddled with bed bugs. Instead, you’ll find yourself in an architecturally intriguing building with quietly sophisticated interiors, complete with clean and spacious rooms, lots of freebies, onsite bar, restaurant, fully kitted kitchen and rooftop enterainment. Poshtels offer shared rooms as well as private rooms, and you have the option of booking an entire dorm – perfect when travelling with friends.

Poshtels are on the rise in Europe and have started to spread in other countries, such as the US, Singapore, South Africa and Australia. Depending on the location, one night in a poshtel could set you back anything between $25 to $200 – which, granted, isn’t cheap, but considering all the perks that come standard with most hostels, it’s worth it.

The poshtel aims to reverse the stigma associated with hostels, and to provide luxury budget accommodation to travellers expecting more bang for their buck.

Would you try staying at a poshtel?
