What to wear for an upgrade

Free first-class upgrades may be as common as albino dolphins, but flight attendants say that your fashion sense could give you the best shot at a seat inside the pointy end.

Sometimes first-class upgrades are all about fashion, darling.

Flight attendants told fashion show Who What Wear that the perfect ensemble could land you a first-class upgrade.

“Smart but understated. You should look like you travel often … it helps. Someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren’t dressed suitably,” said one flight attendant.

In other words, leave the track suit pants in your carry-on bag (you can always change into them later) and dig out your onboard smart casual.

“When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow. No jeans or trainers – so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn,” one flight attendant told Who What Wear.

What’s your favourite onboard ensemble? Have you ever been given a first-class or business-class upgrade? Why do you think you got it?
