Uber’s car rental option

Ride-sharing app Uber is offering a ‘world-first’ car rental trial in Brisbane, but there’s a catch.

The company promises to make renting a car easier and more rewarding, but Uber Rent will be available to just 50 per cent of regular Uber users.

Customers who use the service will get back 10 per cent of the cost of their first rental on Uber Credits and earn Uber Rewards points for subsequent trips.

The Brisbane trial will be followed by a rollout on the Gold Coast and in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

“While many Australians will drive to a wine region, down the coast or explore the mountains in their own car – not everyone has access to their own private vehicle,” explained Dom Taylor, general manager for Uber in Australia and New Zealand.

“At Uber we believe you should always be able to get around, even if you don’t own your own car, andUber Rent is one more way of helping people do just that.”

To check if you have access to the rent option, begin by updating your Uber app to the latest version to see if it’s available.

If it is, select ‘Rentals’ and you’ll see CarTrawler’s search engine to enter your pick-up location and rental date. You can then select and book the car that suits you best and begin your journey.

“This year, the Aussie love of travel has faced pretty tough opposition,” Mr Taylor said.

“Instead of hopping on a plane or heading to the coast, we’ve been staying at home, helping keep everyone safe.

“But now, as state travel restrictions ease, we know Aussies are excited to get moving again. And we’ve heard the calls from our domestic tourism sector that it needs a helping hand to get back on its feet.”

Would you rent a car through Uber? Do you think this will bring down the prices of car rentals in Australia and around the world?
