Australia, often referred to as the land of opportunity, has long been a beacon for those seeking a fresh start and a better quality of life. With its vast landscapes, enviable climate, and laid-back lifestyle, it’s no wonder that people from all corners of the globe are drawn to its shores.
However, there’s one nation in particular that’s making the journey down under more than ever.
The United Kingdom has historically been a significant source of migrants to Australia, and this trend shows no signs of abating. In fact, UK natives remain the largest group of people born overseas living in the country, with an estimated 1.2 million UK expats now calling Australia home.
The allure of Australia’s sunny skies and outdoor lifestyle continues to captivate the British, many of whom are eager to exchange the dreary weather and high-pressure life back home for the promise of a more balanced existence.
Take the story of Duane Johnson, for example. Three years ago, he made the bold decision to leave his life in South Devon behind and relocate to Australia’s Gold Coast with his wife and two teenage children. Despite never having visited Australia before, Duane was drawn to the country’s reputation for its love of the outdoors and the potential for a dream lifestyle.
‘I’d never been down under but I had grown up surfing in the UK, so Australia was somewhere I always wanted to visit. Having the opportunity to live and work here has been a dream come true and was the best decision we ever made,’ he said.
‘My family absolutely loves it here. Never in a million years did I think I’d be living on the Gold Coast.’
He said his family found that the transition to Australian life is smoother than anticipated, with the familiar language and cultural connections easing the process—save for some differences in driving habits.
‘There are so many things to love. The weather, nature and of course the people. The work-life balance is also so much better here,’ said Johnson, who now works for Australian luxury boat brand Riviera.
Johnson’s experience is not unique. Many expats also find the work-life balance a drawcard, alongside the opportunity to spend more time with family and enjoy the natural beauty Australia has to offer.
‘We were really happy in the UK and had a great life. But there was no way we could pass up this type of opportunity. We are all so happy. We would rather grow old saying we did it, rather than regretting we hadn’t,’ shared Johnson.
‘It was for sure a massive risk, but we are so glad to have taken it.’

The recent push for migration has been further fueled by economic factors. Australian companies, such as Riviera, are actively recruiting in the UK, especially in the wake of job losses like those at the Vestas wind turbine factory on the Isle of Wight. Riviera’s international recruitment drive is enticing UK workers with the prospect of swapping the cold European winter for Australia’s sun, sand, and surf.
‘It’s surely one of the best work opportunities in the world,’ says Riviera brand director Stephen Milne.
Migration expert Aman Sethi of JICS Migration notes that Australia’s ‘high quality of life, economic opportunities, and cultural connections’ make it an extremely appealing destination for UK migrants.
The ‘strong demand for skilled workers in industries such as healthcare, aged care, and technology’ is creating clear pathways for individuals and families seeking a brighter future.
‘We have observed a steady rise in inquiries not only from UK professionals exploring visa options but also from Australian businesses looking to hire skilled workers from the UK,’ Sethi told news.com.au.
‘This further highlights Australia’s growing appeal as a top migration destination.’
The Australian way of life, with its emphasis on outdoor living, great weather, and family-friendly cities, is particularly attractive to younger UK migrants. Post-Brexit, there’s been a cultural shift with younger generations more open to seeking opportunities abroad.
Australia’s political stability and safe environment further reinforce its appeal as a top migration destination.
