Bag yourself a new job

Losing your job can be a real blow and while finding a new job may not be easy, there are steps you can take to bag yourself a new job more quickly.

Don’t let the grass grow under your feet. If you have a specific knowledge in a certain field, why not blog and tweet to raise your profile? You can use these mediums to keep in touch with those who work in your chosen field and may be able to help you.

Think about your email address. Is it professional? Snookypants@gmail.com may be fun for friends, but it won’t get you very far with employers. So consider an Outlook or Google account with a proper signature.

Keep your LinkedIn and Twitter profiles up to date and keep in touch with those in your circle. Connect with recruiters in your chosen field and check job boards regularly.

Consider if your salary demands are realistic. It’s OK to think you’re worth the money, but employers who don’t know your background and abilities may not be prepared to pay you what you’re asking. You may be able to negotiate flexi-time, more holidays, working from home or other perks that can boost your package.

Get out and meet people. Find networking events and connect with people you may have worked with years ago.

You may have extensive experience in your field, but that doesn’t mean you have to list all of it on your CV.  Limit your CV to two pages so potential employers can scan through it quickly. Don’t use a wacky fonts and make sure you have a simple, clear format. Restrict your work history to the past 10 years and offer to provide more details if necessary.

Don’t be put off by a job description. This is often the ideal view of an employer, but if they meet the right person, they may be prepared to be a little more flexible. A good attitude and a solid work history can carry you the rest of the way.

Stop being picky. While you’re holding out for your ideal job, a great opportunity could be missed. Most jobs tend to morph to fit the person who is in the role and if you can prove to be a self-starter, you may be able to make the job the role you really want.
